What to Look For In A Muscle Up Pull Up Bar

You will not be able to do muscle ups on many of the home gym pull up bars. For example, a door frame pullup bar will not provide you with enough head room to be able to get up there. When it comes to muscle ups, there are two key things that need to be taken into consideration:

  • Head clearance
  • Stability

The muscle up exercise involves people pulling themselves up to the bar, then bringing their upper bodies above the bar and extending until the arms are fully extended. This clearly requires a lot of space above the bar. But how much?

The distance between the top of your head and the tips of your palms when your arms are hanging at your sides is the absolute minimum distance required. Ideally you will want at least six inches above that distance to allow for free and easy movement.

The muscle up is not a completely straight up and down movement. It actually involves some lateral movement. That means that you will need some room to move on either side of the bar as well as above it. For ease of movement, you should allow for half of your height either side of the bar.

The muscle up takes quite some time to perfect. During that time, there will be quite a lot of swinging going on. Unless the bar is rugged, solid and secure, you will have problems with it! In general, a fixed in place wall mount  pull up bar is going to be far more secure than a detachable pull up bar.

Conclusion

If you are going to step it up to muscle ups, you had better be using a pull up bar for you upper body workouts that is fit for purpose. If you don’t, you could have some unpleasant results. It an excellent piece of equipment for your home gym for building upper body strength using bodyweight exercises.

The three muscle up pull up bars that we have reviewed here are designed for the extra challenges that come with the muscle up exercise. Any one of them is a great piece of exercise equipment to kit out your home gym equipment for muscle ups.
